A huge milestone

So, Caroline's 9th monthday is tomorrow. (Insert obligatory "I can't believe my baybeh is so big!!") And she still isn't crawling, or really mobile in any way. She scoots around a little on her butt, but that's it. I'm getting pretty tired of people asking if she is crawling and then looking disappointed/concerned/whatever when I say no.

I know that she will get there when she's ready, but it does worry me a little. She doesn't get herself into a sitting position either, and she still topples over once in awhile while she's sitting. My real concern is that I took terbutaline while pregnant with her, and I know that can cause gross motor delays. Sigh. Luckily we're seeing the pediatrician for her 9 month visit on Friday, so I can ask about it then.

BUT. LISTEN. Just yesterday, Caroline was chowing down on her lunch (an egg yolk omelette with peas and brown rice). She started to slow down and play with her food like she does when she gets full, and I said what I usually say at that point: "are you all done?" She looked up at me and yelled "done!!"

I squealed so loudly that the poor thing jumped and screwed up her face like she was going to cry. HER FIRST WORD!!! I scooped her up and whirled her around and praised her. I was so excited. I wasn't entirely sure that it was a real word... until dinnertime, when she did the same thing!

My baby is talking! Ahhh!!

This means she's a genius... right? (Humor me, people.)

My son didn't start crawling until 8 months - but then he was walking by the end of 10. So some people were impressed with that, right. Well he says A LOT less words than most children his age. Babies have their own levels of development. The fact that your daughter has already said her first word is huge. She is just developing faster in the communication department rather than the movement department (opposite of my son). I hope you get some good advice from the pediatrician but I think she'll be just fine.

congrats! That's so exciting, and a very convenient first word :)

Obviously she is a genius, yes :) But seriously, she's right on schedule--it's just HER schedule. Girls (typically) develop faster verbally, and boys develop faster in the the motor skills department. Throw in the fact that she was a bit early, and I'd say you've got absolutely nothing to worry about. She's just taking her sweet time. I say enjoy it before you have to run after her all the time!

awwhhh- that must have been so exciting. My 9 month old nephew is just started to crawl a bit (so cute watching him figure it out) but def isn't saying any words yet. My husband and I cannot wait for him to start talking:)

That is so exciting! Congratulations - and such a complex word too - not dada or things that maybe could be words. I would be bragging about THAT all day long : )

Seriously though, AMAZING. That's a good first word too! :) Very efficient.

Aw, that is so cute! She's talking AND eating finger foods....two things that Shane does not. Maybe one day she will have her own Food Network Show. lol.

Hi Julia,

I just wondered if you ever do product reviews.

Created by a smart mother, Nourish Baby http://www.nourish-inc.com/ is a formula-ready bottled water with easy to read volume measurements on one side, a large mouth to add formula, and a nipple top. Now, while mothers are out and about and traveling with baby, they can open a clean bottle, add formula, shake, serve and recycle. No more washing dirty bottles in public bathrooms or hotel rooms, or trying to measure water.

Would you be interested in reviewing Nourish? We’d be happy to send you samples.

Nourish launched in Atlanta in June, has been picked up nationwide by The Paradies Stores and is sold in airports and baby specialty shops around the country. It was recently featured at the Emmy's and is getting a ton of interest from not only moms but celebrities of all types--Denise Richards's girls were just photographed with a bottle each!
Nourish Baby:
• 8 oz. purified spring water with volume markings for proper formula mixing
• Wide neck and extra room for mixing formula
• Has baby reusable and recyclable nipple tops
• Just add formula
• Alleviates washing out dirty bottles in public restrooms and stopping at fast-food restaurants to ask for water
• Small bottles fit tiny baby hands
• Made in the USA
• BPA free
